Time to extract the spidery monster that is my car's wiring harness!
The last of the dashboard connections is the newer ignition switch that my cousin patched in some years ago. Apparently the old original one gave out, and rather than have it repaired/replaced properly, he simply removed the dashboard wood piece (with the various switch hole mounts), disconnected the wiring from the ignition switch, and threw this new generic switch in instead. Ugly, but functional.
One more piece needing removal - this piece that connects to the radio power supply. This piece needs to be removed so the wire can pass back through the slot seen in the rear of the dashboard area.
Here's where the wiring harness passes into the dashboard area, held tight with a large rubber piece.
It takes a bit of tugging, twisting, and wrestling - but it starts to come free.
Free! Free at last.
One more set of wires need detaching, from the passenger side - the wires going to the generator.
Once the generator wires are disconnected, the wiring harness can be pulled out entirely. What a tangled mess! As best I can tell, the wires themselves are in reasonably good shape - but the fabric wraps are all toast. Plan is to address this over the winter, indoors - I'll have to get some wiring testing equipment, and test each wire individually to ensure they're in decent shape, and figure out a solution to get these wires rewrapped. I'd hate to have to spring for a new wiring harness (though that may be the best idea, for the long run) - for this car, I've seen them prices in the high $2000 range. Groan.
The engine compartment, sans wiring. It's starting to look kind of lonely now.
